One sunny afternoon I walked to the Denny’s restaurant a few blocks from my Las Vegas condo. This particular restaurant sits on the corner of 4th and Fremont; however, it is not your typical Denny’s. This location was designed by well-known New York architect James Wines and his architecture firm, SITE.
Wines came to prominence in the 1970s for his bold big box retail buildings designed for the BEST stores. When I was a graduate student I remember saving $100 to buy a book of his work, which I still cherish to this day. I found his bold, sophisticated, yet playful proposals refreshing. In my opinion his work elevated the discussion around the architecture of everyday commerce. He demonstrated that architecture could be serious and whimsical at the same time.
I have always enjoyed the fact that I can walk to and get a reasonably priced meal in one of his projects. The prices and menu are standard; however, there is a sense of pride the employees have at this particular restaurant that I am convinced translates into food that is prepared and served with greater care. In addition to its playful, exuberant atmosphere this Denny’s has a full bar and wedding chapel! As usual I grabbed my own menu and silverware and bellied up to the bar, ordered my $8.95 breakfast slam and started watching a basketball game.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the staff was scurrying around more than usual and realized they were setting up for a wedding. For a mere $199 a couple can get married with a complimentary bottle of champagne, digital photos/video shot by the wait staff and a festive lollypop wedding cake.
At first glance it may seem ridiculous getting married at a Denny’s, but it is affordable and a far better option than getting married in a courthouse. In addition, if you or anyone in your wedding party gets the munchies you can order a side of piping hot pancakes. For the record the wedding service appeared dignified and to the point – it lasted about seven minutes. For the most part the other customers in the restaurant went about their business. There were many smiles and several congratulatory remarks. I was the only one running around taking pictures. The event was much more entertaining than the game – only in Las Vegas!
