Unfortunately, very few people today have the patience or inclination to contemplate the impact of a basic composition. Regardless, composition is the currency of any art and forms the deep structure upon which our entire visual experience is built. I believe there is real meaning, perhaps truth, imbedded in simple elements and their relationship to one another. If we devote the time and effort, these observations and experiences can help mold and train our intuition and emotions. It is difficult to discuss and validate the importance of composition these days due to society’s current emphasis on analytical reasoning. I fear we are losing our ability to critically observe and process these important aspects of our visual experience.
Similar to the scientific method, the meaning and truth in any composition is not created but discovered. That is why my goal has never been to create a masterpiece. Rather, I consider myself an explorer searching for consequential experiences or insight. That is why my work is almost always produced and presented as a series or set of works. I obsessively develop fields using the same compositional elements to facilitate comparison, critical observation and to allow others to participate in this quest. The power of this particular series is the expressive nature of 10 simple strings arranged on a white sheet of paper. Similar to the various melodies played from stringed instruments, the strings shown here have endless expressive potential and authority.
