The image here shows one in a series of several small wall reliefs by contemporary Portuguese artist Miguel Angelo Rocha. It is a small-faceted volume that seems to emerge from the wall, creating complex, irregular spatial conditions around its exterior surfaces. This volume is contrasted with a pure cylindrical form emerging from the top of the volume and painted green. As in many of his works, Rocha will often develop a tension between symbolic order and the observer’s subjectivity.
Rocha utilizes many mediums but is perhaps best known for exploring the sculptural properties of point, line plane, volume and color. He also occasionally incorporates found objects and various non-traditional art materials such as plywood, newspaper, plastic buckets and concrete into his work. His investigations exhibit the powerful influence of form and composition, offering a unique experience that leaves the viewer with a strange feeling of optimism and hope.
