This 2022 work of Lisbon-born sculptor Rui Chafes is entitled “arriving without leaving.” Around 1987 Rui started using black painted iron as his material of choice. Ironically, the material is almost always fashioned into forms that possess a light, organic structure. Another distinctive characteristic of Rui’s work is his attention to site or the location of his work — he spends a great deal of effort considering the space where his work will sit. Whether it is a gallery, landscape or something in between, the site always impacts the work. This particular work sits in a courtyard and gets much of its power by breaking above the roof line to visually connect the lush green grass with the rich blue sky.
However, the most surprising aspect of Rui’s work are the titles he gives his sculptures. They are always short, intriguing and powerful. Naming one’s work is a powerful act and one that is often overlooked or done carelessly. In Rui’s case the names are always thoughtful and add to the work’s impact and one’s experience. Other names he has given his work include “without your name,” “eating the heart,” “final body,” “nothing exists” and “that separates what is the same.” His dedication to writing as well as organizing and publishing the books that accompany his sculptural works undoubtably contribute to their power.
