I spend a great deal of time in the desert, and one phenomenon that has captured my attention is interesting and unique rock formations. The image here shows a rock that was sculpted and formed by the wind. Although the rock was originally produced from the same material there were areas with less dense or durable deposits. As the swirling wind picked up sand and started to wear down and smooth the surface, these pockets of less durable material were removed more quickly. You can find the opposite effect too — sometimes small spherical deposits are surrounded by less dense material. As the rock deteriorates, these small spheres of rock slowly emerge. When fully released they fall to the ground. Locals call them Indian Marbles.
It is interesting to consider that these dynamic formations are made by an invisible process that, due to the time frame, is difficult to detect or measure. These forces gradually reveal hidden differences in the structure of the rock. Differences that always existed but were not initially visible. Like life it can take a long time for the true nature and relative durability of a matter to be revealed. All we can do is yield, relent and marvel at the impact and result of these unseen forces. I see how life’s constant abrasions are what mold our character and reveal our true motivations. Time and life’s relentless challenges can slowing remove our less durable desires and ambitions. I am comforted by the ancient text that promises “He, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished.”

FAITH in that which cannot be seen! The WIND is always a good example…you can actually see the effects of the wind as with the rock formation you describe, but also on the trees and grasses that bend….but also you can feel the wind….but you can’t SEE IT…the wind is my metaphor for GOD 🙂
